Last week, our speaker was Stephanie Brinez from Bat Conservation International. She highlighted the severe threats facing bat populations from land development and environmental changes, which are driving sharp declines in their numbers.

Worldwide, 77 bat species are endangered or critically endangered. Deforestation, urban expansion, pesticides, and climate change are shrinking their habitats and jeopardizing entire ecosystems. Bats are indispensable to life on Earth, and their future hinges on immediate action.

Bats have thrived for over 50 million years. As the second-largest order of mammals—with more than 1,500 species—they inhabit six continents. Globally, they deliver essential ecosystem services: devouring insect pests, pollinating crops, and dispersing seeds that sustain biodiversity and human agriculture.

One key conservation effort addresses abandoned mines, which endanger the public and burden landowners. Through abandoned mine lands (AML) closure programs, contractors install protective gates that exclude humans while allowing safe access for bats and other wildlife.

A broader initiative aims to advance bat conservation across 685 million acres of U.S. federal lands, including forests, deserts, and mountains. In partnership with agencies like the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and National Park Service, experts guide policies to mitigate impacts from energy projects, climate change, recreation, and forest management—while safeguarding critical habitats and bolstering bat populations at priority sites.
