Applications for Lake Worth Beach Rotary Scholarships and Rotary membership  applications are now available on our club’s web site.

Our speaker last week was Drew Bartlett, Executive Director of the South Florida Water Management District, which covers two major watershed basins, the Okeechobee Basin and the Big Cypress Basin.

He explained the very difficult task of keeping the area’s drinking water supply adequate while at the same time managing the water during storms to prevent flooding.

The primary water control system includes 2,175 miles of canals, 2,130 miles of levees/berms, 915 water control structures, 620 project culverts, 89 Pump Stations, About 3,537 hydrological monitoring stations at more than 687 flow sites, including 201 rain gauges and 22 weather stations.

The District is a regional water resources agency responsible for:

Ecosystem, Restoration Water Supply and Flood Protection. Also it is responsible for restoring America’s Everglades, the largest ecosystem restoration project in the world.

They safeguard and expand regional water supplies for people and the environment for today and tomorrow, emphasizing the development of alternative water sources and water conservation.

Created by state legislation in 1949 as the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District it encompasses 31 percent of the state’s total land area.

We thank Mr. Bartlett for coming to speak to us with one of the most interesting and informative programs we have had.
