From our traveling Rotarian, Phil…. Safe trip!!!!!
Last week our speaker was Alessandro Perez who will represent our club and our district on a Rotary Youth Exchange with South Korea.
I am a mentor in the Take Stock in Children program and Alessandro is my mentee.
In our conversations he said he would be interested in studying abroad.
I told him about the Rotary program and he became even more interested, so I had him fill out an application, which he did, and was accepted. (The only one in our district)
We then had to go to Take Stock in Children and found many things had to be done in order for him to remain in that program and receive his 2-year scholarship from Take Stock.
They loved our program and worked with us, John I. Leonard High School (where he is a junior), and Alessandro’s advisor.
The outcome is, he will take the senior graduation required classes online in the next month or two and graduate this year. He will then take a gap year to go abroad and return the following year and receive his scholarship.
Alessandro had never spoken before a group before and he was scared to death, so our Rotarians started asking him questions and helped him through his “stage freight”.
He has asked to come back this week to say thank you for the help and the wonderful opportunity.
I will keep you posted as he makes his way through next year.
And learns to give speeches before groups in…. Korean……
