Last week, Whitney Crowder, founder of Care and Conservation—Sea Turtle Specialists, highlighted the urgent need to protect sea turtle populations.

She emphasized that their work goes beyond treating individual turtles. The organization is committed to safeguarding the species overall, recognizing sea turtles' essential role in maintaining ocean health for millions of years. In Palm Beach County, they perform rescue and release operations to advance their mission of preserving these endangered species and their habitats.  Sea turtles in Florida receive federal and state protections to support their conservation.

Five of the seven existing sea turtle species regularly occupy Florida's waters and nest on its beaches.  For strandings, only permitted individuals can handle rescues directly. Unpermitted people can help only under the immediate supervision of a permitted rescuer. This approach complies with the Federal Endangered Species Act and Florida's Marine Turtle Protection Act, protecting these endangered and threatened animals.  If you spot a potentially distressed sea turtle, call the FWC's 24-hour Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-3922. Experts will assess whether intervention is required.

Southeast Florida's nesting season runs from March 1 to October 31. Turtles usually nest at night but can sometimes be seen during the day. Observe nesting females or hatchlings from afar without interference—turn off lights to avoid disrupting their instincts. Trained biologists track nesting daily, so healthy nests and hatchlings don't require reporting. Sea turtles inhabit offshore, nearshore, inshore areas, and the Intracoastal Waterway, often foraging along rocky ledges, near docks, and in shallows.

Signs of a Sick or Injured Turtle:

• A female nesting during daylight, vulnerable to overheating in the Florida sun.

• A turtle trapped in rocks or beach debris/man-made objects.

• A hatchling heading away from the sea or stuck in an unreachable spot.

• A turtle in the surf or on the beach that isn't trying to return to the water.

• Visible injuries from boat strikes or shark bites.

• A turtle floating at the surface, unable to dive.

• A turtle repeatedly spotted in one spot near a dock, covered in barnacles (indicating poor mobility and possible illness).

• A turtle hooked by fishing gear.

• Entanglement in fishing line or marine debris.
