Our Speaker today was Jim Sugarman. The subject was the History of Phrases and Expressions.
He told us that words evolve through time. There are modifications (such as the word “selfies”). There are semantics like metaphors and euphemisms. General changes like baby talk. Words are borrowed from other cultures ( like Detente & Schlepping ) and Common Expressions.
What’s interesting is not only the meaning but the origin of the words. Some of the expressions discussed were the sayings: Big Wig, Jaywalker, The walls have ears, Caught Red Handed, It cost an arm & a leg. Many of these expressions have been used for many years and have their origins throughout history. The discussion was very interesting, learning the origins of these expressions.
I put my scale in the bathroom corner, and that is where the little liar will stay until it apologizes.
Thanks to Phil Albertz for taking notes at the meeting as your editor is in NJ on vacation for the next month.
